Your meter has not been read if the word "Estimate" appears to the right of the words "Current Reading" on your Washington Gas bill. Sometimes it is necessary for us to estimate readings, especially in instances in which we cannot gain access to your meter or when the battery in the remote device system, if you have one, needs to be changed.
If we are unable to gain access to your meter, we may leave a postage-paid meter reading card. If you receive one of these cards or you would like to report you meter reading for any reason, you may read your meter, record the reading and report your reading to us by 1) mailing the meter reading card back to us the next day, 2) calling us at (703) 750-1000 or email us with our online form.
To read your meter start with the left dial on the row of four, locate the dial hand and record the last number it has passed. Continuing to the right, follow the same procedure for the three remaining dials.
If the hand is between two numbers, record the lower number.
If on hand is directly over a number, record that number.
For Example …
In this example, the first dial reads 9, the second dial reads 5, the third dial reads 8 and the forth dial reads 7. The complete reading is 9587.
If you have a digital meter, simply record the numbers that are displayed.
Estimated Bills are based on the following:
Historical usage;
Actual weather; and
Length of the billing period.
Estimates are usually very close to actual usage, but actual readings are necessary to keep your bills on track.
